How to prepare and stay safe for a Tsunami
Before
It’s important to prepare for a disaster before it even happens, so in case one does happen you

Know the signs of an oncoming Tsunami

Have an evacuation plan ready - pick a place everyone in your family can meet at that’s at least 100 feet above sea level or at least a mile inland.

During
Follow these rules to stay safe if you are ever in a Tsunami

If there is an earthquake: Protect yourself! Drop, Cover, and Hold on. Make sure to protect your head and neck

Once the shaking stops see if there are signs or warnings of a tsunami.

If there are signs of a tsunami in your area, EVACUATE! Get out of danger as soon as possible.

Listen to the radio and emergency broadcasts

If you are in the water grab onto something that floats

If you are in a boat move toward the direction of the waves and out to sea

But if you are in the harbor, move inland.

If you live outside a hazard zone and still receive a warning, check with your local officials

Even after a Tsunami has hit there still may be dangers and hazards that you should be aware of.

Listen to local authorities for information on areas to stay away from

Don’t go in floodwater, since it can contain harmful debris

Be aware of electrocution! Power and electrical lines can fall and electrically charge the water. Don’t touch electrical equipment if it is wet, you are wet, or you are standing in water.

Document personal property damage by taking photos

Take an inventory to see if you have lost anything

Limit your phone usage for emergencies since phone lines are probably down

Take care of yourself and talk to someone if you are feeling upset. It is normal to be scared or have anxiety after something like this.
