Earthquake Preparedness

An Earthquake is a shaking of the earth's surface by energy waves emitted by slowly moving tectonic plates overcoming friction with one another underneath the earth's surface.

What happens during an Earthquake:

  • During an Earthquake the ground will rapidly shake

  •  There are a multitude of causes for earthquakes but some examples include human activity such as tunnel construction, they can be triggered by surrounding activity like cave-ins, and natural reasons such as the tectonic plates underneath us colliding.

  • There are different levels of an earthquake that differ in severity. This can be measured through the magnitude scale. Each following number on the scale increases tenfold making the impact for the Earth progressively dangerous with every number.
